Kennel stress can take a toll on dogs when they’re confined in close quarters with fellow canines. This overwhelming environment, filled with fear, stress, anxiety, and noise, can lead to various stress behaviors, such as pacing, panting, barking, and reactivity. To tackle kennel stress, enrichment is the key, which is why we are offering these special opportunities for YOU to get involved and help. See the various opportunities below.

Looking for a simple, flexible way to help the pets at the APA? Our Drop-In Volunteer Opportunities make it easy to get involved. These easy-to-join sessions are a great way to lend a hand where it’s needed most.

Dog Dates

Are you looking for a furry companion but not ready to commit? Or maybe you're a dog lover in a one-pet household craving some canine company? Our dog date program is the perfect solution! Come and take one of our shelter dogs out for a day of fun and bonding. It's a win-win for you and our pups!

  • Who can take a dog out on a date?
    • Anyone 18 years and older with a valid government-issued state ID can take a shelter dog out on a date.
  • Which dogs can go out on a date?
    • Any heartworm negative animal that is available for adoption, 6 months or older and 40+ pounds.
  • When can a dog go out on a date?
    • Monday until Friday: 11 AM to 6 PM (holiday hours may apply)
    • The latest pickup time is three hours before close. Please drop off by 30 minutes before closing time.
  • Ideas on where to go:
    • Any dog-friendly location, with the exception of dog parks and dog-park themed bars/restaurants.
