2025 IMPACT REPORT
The story of 2025 at the Animal Protective Association of Missouri is one of progress, possibility, and bold steps forward.
This past year marked a defining chapter for APA. Together, we took meaningful steps to shape the future of animal welfare in our region—grounded in a simple but powerful belief: pets and people belong together.
Through a comprehensive needs assessment and months of strategic planning, we listened closely to our community and explored where pets and families need support the most—and how APA can respond in ways that are compassionate, accessible, and lasting.
What emerged was an expanded vision for the future.
At our flagship Brentwood campus, we deepened our commitment to exceptional care—strengthening adoption, veterinary, and community programs that help pets find loving homes and stay with the families who cherish them.
And in one of the most exciting milestones in our history, we purchased a property in North St. Louis County that will become APA’s second permanent location—bringing affordable veterinary care, adoption services, and community programs closer to neighborhoods that have long faced barriers to pet care.
Simply put, 2025 was a year when we did big things.
Because of supporters like you, thousands of pets found loving homes, families received the care they needed to keep their companions, and countless love stories began between pets and the people who adore them.
As we look ahead, we do so with energy and optimism. The work underway today will allow APA to reach more pets, support more families, and build stronger communities for years to come. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Houdini’s Journey: From Fragile Foster Kitten to Beloved Family Member
Houdini was just a week old when he arrived at the APA — fragile, injured, sick, and fighting to survive. He was treated for severe ringworm and injuries to his face, ears, and tail. As he healed, the damaged tissue on his ears and tail didn’t survive and eventually came off as his tiny body worked to recover. His foster parents bottle-fed him through the night and made countless trips to the APA for treatment. Somewhere along the way, they fell in love.
After his surgery, they made it official — adopting the kitten they helped heal from the very beginning.
Now Houdini is healthy, happy, and exactly where he belongs.
Laila’s Journey: From Pregnant Stray to a New Beginning
Laila was found all alone near a lake in Holts Summit, Missouri — scared and heavily pregnant. For three days, two kind community members kept her safe until help arrived.
When she came to the APA, she had just given birth to 11 tiny puppies, and once they were old enough, each of them was adopted into a loving home.
After weaning her puppies, Laila developed a painful infection in her mammary tissue and underwent a major surgery — a partial mastectomy — to remove the damaged area. She also received treatment for an old fracture in her back leg and hip dysplasia in both hips, working with a specialist to help her move with more comfort and ease. While she recovered, Laila spent time in a loving foster home where she could rest and heal.
After nearly 200 days in our care, Laila finally found the loving home she had been waiting for.
