The APA Celebrates Back-to-Back Wins as a Top Workplace and Best Place to Work

The APA has been recognized for its exceptional work environment, earning consecutive St. Louis Top Workplace honors in 2023 and 2024 by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and being named one of the 2024 St. Louis Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. Since their 2023 win, the APA has grown by 37.5%, all while prioritizing employee well-being through the reduction of their full-time hourly requirement, increased minimum hourly wage, and the extension of health insurance benefits to include domestic partnerships. These achievements highlight the APA’s dedication to creating a supportive and fulfilling workplace for their team.

Earning these awards is particularly significant for an animal welfare organization, where compassion fatigue is a common concern due to the emotionally demanding nature of the work. This recognition underscores the APA’s outstanding efforts in mitigating compassion fatigue and fostering a healthy, supportive workplace.

The Top Workplaces award is especially meaningful as it is based solely on employee feedback, reflecting the exceptional workplace environment cultivated by the APA. “We are thrilled to be recognized as a Top Workplace in St. Louis for two consecutive years,” said Sarah Javier, CEO at the APA. “These awards highlight our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of teamwork, compassion, and growth within our organization.”

The APA’s dedication to employee well-being is evident in its comprehensive programs and initiatives, which are designed to create a supportive and thriving work environment. The organization provides training for the entire team on mental health and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and offers sign-on and retention bonuses for all positions, wellness reimbursements, and various wellness programs. “We care deeply about the health and happiness of our employees,” Javier added. “Their well-being directly impacts the quality of care we provide to the pets in our care and the overall success of our mission.”

The APA’s Party Pack Committee regularly organizes treats and activities to boost staff morale, while the “Why Hours” program provides employees with opportunities to connect with the mission in unique ways beyond their day-to-day responsibilities. By prioritizing employee well-being, the APA cultivates a dedicated and compassionate team. This dedication translates into exceptional animal care and strengthens the APA’s mission of connecting pets with loving homes.

“Our team members are the heart and soul of our organization,” Javier continued. “Their unwavering dedication to our mission and the well-being of the animals is truly inspiring. These awards are a testament to their hard work and the positive impact they make every day.”

The APA extends its gratitude to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the St. Louis Business Journal for these prestigious recognitions. The organization also wishes to express its deep appreciation to the community, volunteers, donors, and supporters who contribute to the success of their life-saving work.
