Urgent Help Needed: Our Shelter is Overflowing

Dear Friends,

Today, I am reaching out with a heartfelt request for urgent assistance. At our APA Olivette location, we are facing an unprecedented challenge. Our shelter is currently at full capacity, caring for 260 animals, and we desperately need your help.

This past week, we welcomed 122 animals into our shelter – a staggering 25% increase over our usual weekly intake. With every large kennel occupied, and temperatures rising, we anticipate even more animals will need our help. The reality is stark: we have 12 new dogs arriving daily, and we need to ensure the same number can leave through adoption, fostering, or transfer to another rescue.

Here’s how you can make an immediate difference:

  • Adoption: If you’ve considered adding a pet to your family, now is the perfect time to help Empty the Shelters. Your decision to adopt will save a life and make room for another animal in need. Thanks to our friends at the BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell, all pets 6 months and up at APA Brentwood and APA Olivette have a $25 adoption fee through May 15.
  • Fostering: We are in dire need of temporary foster homes for our dogs. Fostering not only helps alleviate the space crisis but also provides our animals with a loving environment as they await permanent adoption. We will supply all necessary items, including food, a leash, a collar, and medical care.
  • Lost and Found Assistance: If you have lost a pet, or if you find one, please use our Lost and Found text program before bringing the animal to the shelter. Text ‘Lost and Found’ to 1-844-752-3642, and we will provide you with all the necessary resources directly to your phone. You can also visit our website at apamo.org to check if your lost pet is already with us.
  • Volunteer: It takes over 60 hours to give each dog two 10-minute walks daily. The more time outside the better! Consider signing up for regular volunteer shifts or many of our one-time volunteer opportunities like pack walks or taking a dog out on a doggie date.

The situation is critical, and we cannot overcome this challenge without you. Every action you take, no matter how small, makes a significant difference in the lives of these animals who depend on us. Together, we can ensure that every pet receives the care and love they deserve.

Thank you for your unwavering support and for standing with us during this critical time.

With Gratitude,

Sarah Javier
