All great relationships are based on mutual understanding

We believe humane education can create a more compassionate community for people and pets alike. Ongoing education programs are integral to this effort, and serve everyone from the age of two to 102.

For Kids

Getting Kids Involved

A strong bond between a child and an animal can encourage growth and learning for both in a number of ways. Each of our youth-centered education programs connect young people with animals through fun, innovative methods.

In the classroom

Our signature in-school programs focus on bullying prevention, compassion, literacy, and animal safety. We bring adopted and adoptable pets to area classrooms for hands-on learning every day of the school year to help kids cultivate social-emotional skills. If your school could use a little puppy break, and a lot of experiential learning, we’re here to make that happen.

Scout Programs

The APA can help your troop contribute to the community. Each year we partner with scout groups throughout our region to deliver fun and meaningful service learning to our community’s future leaders.

Tuesday Tales

Tuesday Tales is a weekly story-time designed for our littlest learners, aged 2 to 5. During COVID-19, we’ll be posting a new story and activity on Facebook and Twitter every Tuesday at 10:30am. When it’s safe to do so, we’ll resume in-person sessions at the APA Adoption Center.

Birthdays

For your health and safety, we’re unable to host in-shelter birthday parties right now. But we still want to celebrate! For a $25 donation, we’ll send you a Birthday Box, perfect for ages 4-10, that’s full of APA goodies, craft activities, and a letter from our shelter pets.

For the Community

Building a Life With Your Pet

Whether you’re bringing a newborn animal home, merging multi-pet households, or simply looking for a  playdate with puppies, our staff is here to help. Check the calendar for the next event that speaks to your needs.

Animal Welfare Certification

This six-class series can open pathways for those passionate about animal welfare, and help build an understanding of the work organizations like the APA do.

Online Courses

We strive to make animal education accessible to everyone. With our growing list of online courses, you can learn on your own time from anywhere.

For Seniors

Improving the Lives of Senior Citizens

It’s no secret pets provide therapeutic value. Since 1983, the APA has been delivering joy and numerous health benefits to St. Louis’ senior care facilities.

Pet Reach

APA volunteers and their pets visit over 13,000 senior citizens every year through our Pet Reach program, offering love and unlimited snuggles.

Senior Saviors

Our Senior Saviors program sends puppies and kittens to local care facilities for fostering. We supply the food, medical care, and supplies—residents supply the love.
