APA partners with BISSELL Pet Foundation to take in multiple dogs surrendered from commercial breeders

BISSELL Pet Foundation, with the support of the Animal Protective Association (APA) of Missouri, is providing lifesaving assistance to more than 200 dogs and puppies surrendered by commercial breeders. All dogs will receive second chances as they make their way via flight and ground transport to start new lives at animal welfare organizations in Missouri, including the APA and the Humane Society of Missouri, as well as organizations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina and Tennessee. This lifesaving mission was funded and facilitated by BISSELL Pet Foundation in partnership with National Mill Dog Rescue.

The operation was initiated following multiple surrenders of puppies and adult dogs from commercial breeders. The APA is supporting this effort by providing an animal care and veterinary team to assist with medical exams and health certificates. BISSELL Pet Foundation’s support includes funding for medical support, boots-on-the-ground aid from foundation staff and animal welfare industry experts, such as the APA, transport and placement. The foundation is able to react quickly during a crisis, mobilizing its Animal Incident Management team. The dogs will be examined by veterinarians, vaccinated and provided with health certificates so they can be placed within the foundation’s national shelter and rescue partner network through air and ground transport.

As part of this rescue effort, over 20 dogs are set to arrive at APA Brentwood on January 25, 2024. Upon arrival, each dog will undergo spaying or neutering, along with comprehensive medical check-ups. Following the clearance, most of these dogs will be ready for adoption within the next few days, with some available as soon as Saturday. The adoption process includes a comprehensive package covering an initial examination, microchipping, vaccinations, deworming, flea and tick preventatives, and necessary medications. Additionally, all dogs undergo heartworm tests. To ensure the well-being of the adopted pets and provide peace of mind to their new families, each adoption comes with 30 days of complimentary pet insurance

“BISSELL Pet Foundation is proud to partner with National Mill Dog Rescue in their continued mission to rescue thousands of dogs and puppies. The surrender of this many dogs and puppies can be overwhelming,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We are honored to bring our Animal Incident Management program to support them with funding, placement and transport of these sweet dogs that deserve to be loved pets, not commodities.”

“We are proud to collaborate with National Mill Dog Rescue and BISSELL Pet Foundation, working together to make a meaningful impact on the lives of these pets,” said Sarah Javier, CEO of APA.” Our dedicated team will conduct initial exams and provide essential health certificates, ensuring these pets receive the care they deserve. This partnership exemplifies our commitment to the well-being of animals, and we are honored to contribute to the journey of these pets toward happier and healthier lives.”
