APA Receives $50,000 Grant From PetSmart Charities to Connect Spanish-Speaking Adopters With Shelter Pets in St. Louis

Inaugural bilingual adoption event hosted Sat. Feb. 3 at Brentwood PetSmart; Next event scheduled for Sat. March 2

The Animal Protective Association (APA) of Missouri has received a $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more pets in Saint Louis for adoption and connect them with potential pet parents in the Spanish-speaking community.

Some four million pets find themselves in U.S. shelters each year. Through bilingual staffing and the translation of communications, the APA aims to eliminate language barriers, ensuring seamless access to the joys of pet adoption. Additionally, funds will help procure dental x-ray equipment for APA Brentwood’s soon-to-be renovated shelter clinic where the veterinary staff can diagnose and treat adoptable pets more quickly, reducing potential discomfort and expediting their journey to a new adoptive home.

“We’re incredibly grateful for our partnership with PetSmart Charities as their investment enables the APA to reach underserved communities looking to add a pet to their family,” says APA President and CEO, Sarah Javier. “We continue to see a record-breaking number of animals needing homes. By reaching new audiences and expanding our shelter medicine capabilities we’re better equipped to find homes for even more pets looking for love and a second chance.”

“Shelters across the U.S. are struggling to keep pace with the number of animals coming in and need support from their communities to bring pets and people together,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities. “We’re proud to support the APA and the essential work they do to care and advocate for the animals that come through their door in need of loving families. Please consider supporting their lifesaving work through volunteering, fostering, adopting, or by making a donation.”
