2023 Was A Record-Breaking Year

As we enter the new year, the APA team is filled with both pride and gratitude as we reflect on the remarkable achievements that have shaped our organization’s journey over the past year. While we weren’t immune to the national crisis in animal welfare, which included never-before-seen levels of intake in shelters across the country, our team rose to the challenge and helped more animals than ever before in our 101-year history.

First and foremost, our team is thrilled to announce that 2023 has been a record-breaking year for the APA. Our second location, APA Olivette, completed its first full year of operation, and the results are extraordinary. We not only met but exceeded our adoption goals, with a total of 6,614 pets finding loving homes. This success is a testament to the dedication of our incredible team, volunteers, and fosters, who cared for over 9,000 pets throughout the year.

In addition to the heartwarming adoption numbers, our veterinary team played a crucial role in the community, serving 4,732 pets through our Wellness Clinic and completing 4,987 spay/neuter surgeries across both locations. Introducing the APA’s Lost and Found Facebook Page for lost pets helped facilitate the reunification of over 1,384 pets with their owners, showcasing the power of technology and community collaboration.

Our call for new volunteers was met with overwhelming support from the community, resulting in 2,035 new volunteer applicants joining our cause in 2023. This surge in volunteerism underscores the community’s commitment to our mission, and we are profoundly grateful for the increased support. Volunteers generously devoted over 90,000 hours to support and care for pets at APA.

Our Outreach program continued to make a significant impact, with 751 pets in under-resourced communities receiving assistance—the highest number since the program’s inception in 2018. Through our Safe Care and Crisis Housing initiatives, we provided temporary shelter and support to over 93 pets, enabling their owners to find safety or secure stable housing, ultimately keeping these pets with the family who loves them. In addition, we provided over 10,000 pounds (about half the weight of a school bus) of pet food to underserved communities in the region.

Our Humane Education program also flourished, with over 3,200 participants engaging in various programs, such as summer camps, animal safety classes, and anti-violence programming, marking an 80% increase from the previous year.

In terms of outreach and communication, we reached a record number of people through social media and communications, amassing over 10 million video views across our channels. This increased visibility has played a pivotal role in raising awareness about our vital work and sharing stories that have led to more pets finding homes.

Our organization’s growth is reflected not only in our achievements but also in our expanding team. Employment increased by 38%. We were awarded the Top Workplaces 2023 honor by St. Louis Post-Dispatch Top Workplaces. This recognition is a testament to the organization’s commitment to providing a positive and fulfilling work environment for its dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

Speaking of growth, construction started at APA Brentwood to add an entirely new floor for the continued expansion of our team. Additionally, we are ensuring that we can continue providing the very best care to pets through renovated pet care spaces and a new, state-of-the-art surgical center that will serve our shelter pets.

Furthermore, we proudly launched the Big Dog Energy campaign, an initiative designed to bring attention to the challenges shelters, like the APA, face when the intake of large-breed dogs far outpaces the demand. Recognizing that big dogs make wonderful, loving companions, this campaign also sought to increase adoption rates for these pets, and we are happy to report that it is working.

None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated staff, volunteers, Board members, transfer and rescue partners, donors, and our esteemed partners, including Purina, PetSmart Charities, Petco Love, and so many others. Your commitment to our mission has fueled our success, and we are immensely grateful for your continued support.

As we embark on the exciting journey that awaits us in 2024, let us carry the spirit of collaboration, compassion, and dedication that has defined our organization’s success. Together, we will continue making a positive impact on the lives of pets and the communities we serve.

Thank you for your outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment.
